The great county of Lancashire has been one of the most influential in England.  The cities of Manchester and Liverpool are both in Lancashire.

Much of the south of the county is made up of industrial townscapes, but once past the river Ribble the landscape changes to a more familiar one of moorland.  The Fylde peninsula (home to Blackpool) is very flat.  Across Morecambe Bay the Furness peninsula (the tail end of the Lake District) is now part of the huge conglomerate county of Cumbria, a loss which hit Lancashire very hard indeed.

Most of Lancashire's Castles are in the north of the county.  Many in the south fell victim to the industrial revolution - Lord Leverhulme even going to the trouble building a replica of Liverpool Castle at Rivington!
