The great maritime county of Hampshire has many superb Castles, particularly along the south coast guarding the important Solent waterway, the entrance to the harbours of Portsmouth and Southampton.
The centre of the county is cut through by the South Downs, whilst the North Downs sweep in from Surrey.
In the west of the county is the "New" Forest, one of England's two newest National Parks (along with the South Downs) and famed for its wild ponies.
