Cheshire is both the last county of the Midlands and the first of the North West.  It has a split personality, not helped by its position on the border of Wales confusing the identity of the county a little more still!

Surprisingly few Castles cluster along the Welsh Border, mainly because of the strong grip of the Earls of Chester over the county in medieval times.

Much of Eastern Cheshire is the flat Cheshire Plain, rising in the far east to the Pennine Hills and in the west to the hills which mark the beginning of Wales.

However, Cheshire does have some superb Castles; Beeston is the best medieval one, Peckforton a superb copy of a medieval Castle, Cholmondeley is famed for its gardens and Mow Cop, slap bang on the Staffordshire border, is one of the most dominantly placed follies anywhere.
