Much of Cambridgeshire is reclaimed from the sea. From a short way north of Cambridge the land becomes an astonishing vista of straight rivers, wide flat fields and BIG skies. Although this makes for little variation in landscape the Fens have a magic all their own, particularly on a sunny winter morning.
The cities of Ely and Cambridge are both amongst Britain's most beautiful and on the whole the old county of Cambridgeshire rewards those who are prepared to look a little bit beyond the surface.
Alas the same cannot be said for Cambridgeshire's Castles which are amongst the most uninspiring in the country. Very little stonework remains and most of the earthworks are very low lying.
