Conwy Castle
Caernarvonshire was absorbed into Gwynedd in 1974 and is that wild part of Wales around the heights of Snowdonia and beyond, the rugged and remote Lleyn Peninsula. In medieval times this was a hot bed of Welsh independence and as a consequence Edward I built his most spectacular Castles in this area: Conwy, Caernarvon, Criccieth (and just outside the county Harlech and Beaumaris).
Today it is a land of tourism, but still it retains its wildness and remoteness, the very quintessence of Wales. Major towns include Bangor, Caernarvon , Betws-y-Coed and the tourist meccas of Pwhelli and Llandudno and, of course, Portmeirion.
