Brecknockshire - sometimes called Breconshire - is where the Valleys of the south give way to the empty mountains of central Wales. The Brecon Beacons National Park is one of Britain's most beautiful areas. It is also a border area with Offa's Dyke still marking most of the boundary with England. The county was absorbed into Powys in 1974.
It is a county of small but interesting Castles with towns to match; Builth Wells, Hay-on-Wye and the City of Brecon with it's historic Cathedral.
