The old county of Berkshire was halved by the 1974 re-arrangement of counties and lost two of its best Castles - Wallingford and the ancient site of Uffington (more famous for its White Horse) - to modern Oxfordshire.

The south of Berkshire has the tail end of the Chiltern Hills whilst the west has parts of the Cotswolds and the Wiltshire Downs.

Roy in Windsor

Berkshire is, of course, dominated by the great Royal Castle at Windsor which stands at the eastern extreme of the county and is the largest occupied Castle in the World.
